Best City Car: Fiat Panda

The sign of a great car is strength in depth. Just when we thought Fiat had forgotten how to make small models, along came the Panda and knocked us all for six. And the baby Fiat has been more than just a flash in the pan. Our Car of the Year three years ago, the Panda has once again proved itself the best bet for motoring in the city.

Best 4x4 Off-roader:Land Rover Discovery

Off-roaders have been getting a hard time recently, but it's worth remembering that the best SUVs have abilities that normal cars lack. Whether it's fording deep water, ploughing through a muddy field, effortless towing or simply carrying the family, accomplished 4x4s should soothe the pains of everyday driving.

Best Sporting Car:Porsche Cayman

Picking a winner in this category is a tough task - the best sporting car needs to offer driver involvement by the bucketload and bring a smile to your face every time you hit the road. Beautifully sorted handling and communicative controls are also a must. With contenders coming from a wide spread of hot hatches, coupés and super saloons, it's a fiercely contested category.

Best Executive Car:BMW 5-Series

Best Executive Car BMW 5-Series Commended: Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class July 2007BMW 5-SeriesWinner: BMW 5-SeriesCan anything topple the 5-Series? The all-conquering BMW has now won this award four years running – and shows no sign of being usurped any time soon. BMW isn’t resting on its laurels though. Earlier this year, it made a raft of changes to keep the 5 ahead of the game. As part of the firm’s Efficient Dynamics programme – which focuses on weight reduction, engineering and consumption – all nine powerplants are either new, or have been enhanced to boost performance and economy. Inside, criticisms of the somewhat fiddly iDrive system have been addressed with eight programmable ‘favourite’ buttons that access frequent functions such as a top sat-nav destination. New technology, including a lane departure warning system and adaptive cruise control with stop and go, which works in traffic, has also been added. However, the strongest weapon in the 5-Series’ armoury is its driver appeal. While it’s every inch the comfortable executive cruiser, it can perform like a sports car when prompted. Passengers don’t go short-changed, either – there’s generous rear seat accommodation and the boot is big, too. With unrivalled build quality and the excellent Service Inclusive maintenance package, it’s no surprise the firm sold a record number of models here last year.

Best Supermini MPV:Nissan Note

Buying a small car doesn't have to mean compromising on space - just take a look at the current crop of supermini MPVs. The market has grown in popularity so much that last year we introduced a new award specifically for these smaller multi-purpose vehicles. And it's 2006's winner, the Nissan Note, which retains its crown.

Driver Power Award:Skoda Octavia

Over the past six years, the Auto Express Driver Power Survey has become the biggest and most influential car reliability and satisfaction survey around.

Special Warranty:Kia seven year warranty

The shortlist for the Auto Express Special Honour is always the most varied of the year. It's designed to recognise any special achievement by a car, innovation, manufacturer or development. Previous years have seen the Honda ADAS driver-assist system, Toyota Prius and Bentley clinch the silverware.

Car Of The Year:Ford Mondeo

So here it is - our overall champion of 2007... the Number One car in the UK. The new Mondeo is the most crucial model for some time from Britain's biggest car maker. And we are delighted to report it proves conclusively that the family car's obituary, written with the rise of the compact executive sector, is premature.

Fiat Panda:Best Small Car

Back then, our judges loved its looks, road manners and practicality - and these are still strong attractions. The Panda is also cracking value, and isn't plagued by the reliability issues which have afflicted some older stablemates.

Honda JazzBest Supermini

The Jazz continues to hit all the right notes in the supermini category. It has now won four consecutive titles in this sector, and our judges couldn't look beyond last year's overall winner because the model simply gets better with age.
